How many times did you paraphrase something during your days in college? Dr. Martin Luther King stole his entire doctoral thesis, famous writers have stolen whole manuscripts. That does not devalue the work Dr. King did nor does it devalue the War of the Worlds, which was written after the previously mentioned manuscript.
I will admit I paraphrased things for my thesis and for reports that were turned in to professors. I did not steal the works in total but I did paraphrase things that there was no way I could have said better than those who did the original. So now the question comes up, Should we be blocked or shut down because we build on the work of others?
Before you answer, Henry Ford got the idea for the fuel system in his engine from his wife’s perfume bottle. It seems that the atomizer on the bottle that allowed misting was perfect for placing fuel in a piston chamber. He did not ask for permission to use the design.
If SOPA and/or PIPA had been in place would you drive or take your horse?
A couple in California posted a video of their 2 year old on YouTube for the child’s grandparents to see whenever they wanted. The video was pulled because they were listening to a CD on their stereo and it could be heard while the child, in his walker, danced to it. It was claimed to be an illegal broadcast by the record label, not the artist just the label, so YouTube pulled it without reviewing it. That is what we are all afraid of.
Is there an alternative? Yes there is. The Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act or the Open Act for short, is the alternative. I have a copy of this on the shelf beside me. It still allows violators to be shut down if they are found guilty, but not before. I fully support this piece of piracy legislation as it is written.
A portion of this was sent to the White House via email. I told them that I would post their response if they chose to make one. Come back and see what happens.
