Nope not a typo, the title is 100% correct. National Novel Writing Month begins on 1 November and ends on 30 November. Are you ready? Will you take the challenge?
What is the challenge you ask? A 50,000 word novel written in the month of November. That is a bit of a challenge. Authors world wide are going to give it their best shot. How about you?
It is not just for published authors. Any author is welcome and many publishers are running contests to see who has the best and several have offered to publish the winners.
Check with your favorite publisher, you might find one of those contests. Sign up and give it your all! I am.
What will you write about? Whatever is on your mind or something that you love to read, talk about or just have fun. It is a novel not a text book, so enjoy yourself. That is why we got into writing in the first place right? Umm … okay I know it is work. But editing and research are all a part of the process so have fun with the story!
Do you have a bundle of short stories that could fit together with some work? A rewrite of some sections and some creative editing in others. Yahoo! Go for it! turn them into your Novel.
For those of you who never heard of this event before here is a short quick history. Yup I’m going to save you the research.
Back in 1999 in San Francisco 21 writers got together and created the challenge. Then they were the only people to take it. They had fun! That is why they turned it into an annual event. In 2011 the number of writers taking the challenge rose to 256,618.
Think of all the success stories that came out of that event. Is it time to add your success story to this years challenge?
Look at it this way, even if you do not finish it by 30 November you will be close enough to being finished to have your novel complete by the end of this year. That is an accomplishment no matter how you look at it.
Now go have some fun and get prepared to write your novel. Do the research now so it is done before 1 November. Create a schedule for your writing so that you are not interrupted by the little everyday things in life. Set up all the things you will need to make you comfortable while you write. I know my coffee pot is moving close to my desk with a gallon of water and the tea bags so I have enough to drink and am not running back and forth to my kitchen. Yes I will be going to the bathroom a bit but it is only twenty feet away. Between that a few bunches of grapes and a box a of donuts I know I’m good to go. All I need is my imagination. I think I can bring that without planning or special arrangements, or at least I hope so.
So it is time to swim through the pages of your thesaurus. Self published or through traditional publishing, it does not matter. The fun is in the writing and creating the story. So get yours ready and join the challenge.
